More than likely you’ve heard about having a glass of warm water with fresh lemon as soon as you wake up to help with weight loss and detoxing, but have you ever looked into why or other alternatives?
The why to the warm water part:
Drinking a glass of warm water before a meal (approximately 30 minutes) has been linked to improvements in digestion, which in turn can aide weight loss. Studies have also found that drinking warm/hot water can lead to slight increases in your body temperature which can increase your metabolic rate.
The Lemon part:
Adding fresh lemon to your water (either chunks of lemon or the juice of a freshly squeezed lemon) has been known to kick start the digestive system for the day as it maximizes enzyme function/bile production in the liver and as such aids in the elimination of waste products and toxins from the body with more ease. It can also help with clearing your skin, acting as a diuretic to remove excess water weight, strengthening the immune system, improving bad breath, elevating moods, stop UTIs, relieve constipation, improve brain health, and since lemons are one of the most alkalizing foods for the body (acidic on their own but alkalizing inside the body), they are able to dissolve uric acid in the body which makes them great at reducing pain and inflammation in our knees and joints.
Annnndddddd if that didn’t convince you to give it a try, lemons are also a good source of calcium, vitamin C, potassium and pectin fiber (beneficial for colon health – yep the fibre helps clean out the colon aka poop), and have antibacterial and immune boosting medicinal properties.
Don’t like lemons or allergic? Other warm water options to start your day are:
Warm water on its own
Warm water with cayenne pepper (as much as you can handle, 1-2tsp is plenty): Some things that cayenne pepper can be helpful for includes increasing you metabolism, aiding digestion and detoxification, boosting the circulatory system, and can help with regulating blood sugar levels. You can even supercharge this and do lemon and cayenne!
Warm water with Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV): Using good quality ACV (organic unrefined with the mother – a cloudy like substance that is nutrient dense) has also been linked to improvements in digestion, weight loss, bloating, prevents indigestion, soothes sore throats, and can decrease glucose levels. TIP: personally I prefer to shot the ACV (approx. 30 mls) down and then follow with warm water afterwards.
The How to:
Try one of the above options (or a combination) to find what works best for your body and your digestive system (for me it is just lemon and warm water that works best). Aim for 1-2 cups of warm water first thing in the morning. After a lemon or ACV warm drink rinse the mouth with normal water to ensure the mouth is clear from any of the acidic liquid as this is optimal for maintaining your lovely chompers.
Further, when you consciously practice at the beginning of the day a morning ritual like this, it sets you up for the rest of the day to make conscious and healthy practices. Try it and see how it fares for you. At worst, you started the day off with some good hydration!
